Ava & John: Amblyopia

鈥淲hen you have kids, you want a doctor鈥檚 office that is set up for them. And 乐播传媒 is. The waiting room, the things to do, the way the staff and doctors engage the children 鈥 it鈥檚 all just for them.鈥

鈥撀燞ilda, Mother

Ava, seeing better after being treated for amblyopia by 乐播传媒 pediatric ophthalmology experts.

Hilda, a St. Augustine, Fla., mom, knew her two kids had a lot in common. But she never thought they鈥檇 have the same commonly undiagnosed eye problem.聽聽

She first realized something wasn鈥檛 right with her daughter鈥檚 vision during a visit to their pediatrician鈥檚 office.聽

Uncovering a Shared Issue

鈥淎va was starting to read already, and there was no outward sign that something was wrong,鈥 says Hilda, who was living with her family in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., at the time. 鈥淏ut when they covered her left eye, she couldn鈥檛 read any letters with her right eye.鈥

Four-year-old Ava was diagnosed with聽amblyopia (also called 鈥渓azy eye鈥). Because amblyopia聽usually occurs in one eye only, many parents are unaware of the condition. But if left untreated, amblyopia can lead to permanent vision loss.聽

Hilda鈥檚 pediatrician told her that 乐播传媒 Children's was the place to go for kids鈥 ophthalmology, even though it was more than 300 miles away in Northeast Florida. 鈥淚 tucked that away as a good thing to know,鈥 says Hilda.聽

Knowing that vision issues are often hereditary, Hilda had her son John, who鈥檚 two years younger than Ava, tested when he was a little older. Like his sister, John had amblyopia, as well as farsightedness.

Moving Closer to 乐播传媒

When their family relocated to St. Augustine, Hilda knew that her children, then 8 and 6 years old, were close enough to get expert care at a 乐播传媒 location. The siblings began receiving pediatric eye care at the 乐播传媒 campus in Jacksonville鈥檚 San Marco 苍别颈驳丑产辞谤丑辞辞诲.听

After a few visits, Hilda learned about 乐播传媒鈥 Jacksonville South office, which quickly became her family鈥檚 most convenient place to get the eye care they needed. 鈥淚t cut my travel time in half,鈥 says Hilda, noting how important it was for her to bring Ava and John to a child-friendly environment. 鈥淲hen you have kids, you want a doctor鈥檚 office that is set up for them. And 乐播传媒 is. The waiting room, the things to do, the way the staff and doctors engage the children 鈥 it鈥檚 all just for them. That was something I really appreciated.鈥澛

The Importance of Early Eye Care

Hilda encourages other moms to get their kids鈥 vision checked out by a pediatric eye doctor if they fail a vision screening or suspect something is wrong. It could be a problem that often goes undetected.

鈥淎 lot of children don鈥檛 like going to the doctor. But if they have a problem like we had and you wait, usually things get worse,鈥 she says. 鈥淭ime is not your friend. Seek good, qualified treatment.鈥澛
